For the first time since inception the BET Experience will be held in South Africa! Yes,that was not a spelling error on my side and best of all, its happening right here in Johannesburg (well it is the city of dreams and possibilities, so where else?). For those of you who have been living under a rock (just kidding Fred) here’s the low-down on the BET Africa Experience and what/ who you can expect to see:
Lets start off with a bit of history around BET: it’s short for Black Entertainment Television and is an American basic cable and satellite channel that is owned by the BET Network and was founded in 1979 by CEO, Debra L. Lee. Originating from that was the BET Awards that was established to celebrate African Americans and other minorities in music, acting etc. The BET Experience is a 3 day festival leading up to the BET Awards, which means for 4 consecutive days all you do is have fun and celebrate good music. Moving on to our own soil, it’s finally happening, in just over a week *breath* and I’m stoked, which is the understatement of the year! There’s something for everyone, from stand-up comedy, dance battles and celebrity basketball to genius talks, fashion and gourmet food and of course my personal favorite, BET drift zone! Its a festival that appeals to all your senses and the perfect way to kick off the summer.
The star-studded line-up for the BET Experience Concert includes R&B sensation Maxwell, Grammy award winner singer Raphael Saadiq and the Queen of Hip Hop soul, Mary J. Blige , African acts such as Flavour and Diamond Platnumz as well as homegrown talent and BET nominee AKA and DJ Euphonik among others. R&B singer Tamar Braxton left broken hearts all around when announced that she’d be unable to make it but we pray for speedy recovery 🙂 I’m really excited to see Mary J Blige performing live as I’ve always been a huge fan of her and her music. Those of you whom have attended Maxwell’s concerts when he was in SA in 2013 can agree with me that we’re definitely in for a treat (I went to the show in Durban and it was amazing). Comedy fans you’ll be entertained by the likes of David Kau, Joey Rasdien, Celeste Ntuli and Kenyan funnyman Churchill among others that will keep you in stitches throughout.
