I’ve been ranting and raving about the inaugural BETExperience Africa to just about anyone who would listen but in all honestly, can you really blame me? This is one of the biggest, most-talked about events to hit our shores and it should be celebrated! In my previous post, I mostly delved into the history, focused on music and comedy and provided you with vital information about the event. I’ve neglected to go into details about some of the interesting events of the day so this is my redemption (also it would’ve been a really long post and you would’ve stopped reading halfway anyway…so I did it for you) I’ll start off with one of favorite inserts for the day, fashion:
This one is for all the fashionistas, fashion lovers and trendsetters out there; BET and African fashion pioneers AFI (Africa Fashion International)have partnered to bring the best of African fashion to the BETExperience Africa. Among the designers whose stunning creations will be sashaying down the catwalk on stage will be NN Vintage (new label of Mafikizolo lead vocalist, Nhlanhla Nciza), Loin Cloth & Ashes, Tuelo Nguyuza Collectiv, KL Tsotetsi , Rich Mnisi and many more. For those of you who are not familiar with AFI , you can find more information here. Be sure to get your front row seats to find some inspirations for wardrobe updates.
Next on the list we have South Africa’s first Genius Talks – a series of candid conversations between leading luminaries and younger contemporaries. Designed to inspire, educate and entertain lovers of African and African-American culture, Genius Talks invites key opinion formers and leaders in their field to open up about what drives them to be the best in their fields. Confirmed for the first Genius Talk is charismatic South African Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula, who will give insights into his profession and how he balances his success with real-life issues in a changing world. If you would love to learn from Mr Mbalula and debate with your peers, this is one event you don’t want to miss.
I know a few sneakerheads and footwear enthusiasts and they are absolutely delighted that BET has paired up with “Hunting for Kicks” to stage a 360-degree sneaker experience including rare, vintage and collectible sneakers. Hunting for Kicks will also feature a “swap meet”, sneaker customization and an exclusive sneaker cleaning service. For more information, have a look here
Last but not least, the one event that definitely stand “tall” above the rest is the Celebrity Basketball game hosted by NBA and Fordin partnership with Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Africa . It will feature former NBA All-Star and 1992 Slam Dunk Champion, Cedric Ceballos and performances by an NBA Dunk Team. As part of the celebration, the game will also feature several South African artists and entertainers.
Thousands of music, sports and fashion fans are expected to turn out for the inaugural BETExperience Africa – the ultimate lifestyle festival featuring a day-long celebration of music, comedy, fashion, sport, food, and more. Created by VIMN Africa’s general entertainment channel BET (DStv channel 129), the day will culminate with the BETExperience Africa Concert headlined by superstar artists and Grammy Award winners Maxwell, Mary J. Blige, Young Thug and Raphael Saadiq, alongside AKA, Flavour, and Diamond Platnumz.
