An electrifying night with Boyz II Men

I thought I had said all there is to say about Boyz II Men in previous posts but last night proved that they’re the masters of reinvention.

The previous show I attended was very chilled, the kind of show that you would expect with their music. Most people were seated throughout, it was mellow and felt like you were in your room listening to their cassette or CD. Not last night, no. Last night was electrifying in ways that I didn’t expect and I welcomed it with open arms.

When we arrived, Mr Phix It was on stage playing mostly 90’s R&B and hip-hop, which was the perfect vibe for the evening. Next up was Lunga Mavusa and I have to admit that I’ve never listened to his music. That is something that I will definitely rectify after last night as his voice and stage presence is absolutely mesmerizing. I didn’t know any of his songs but recognized Intliziyo, which he did with Lloyiso. The feedback that he received from the crowd throughout was amazing as, though I didn’t know his music, others clearly did.

The moment Boyz II Men walked on stage, dressed in all white, the crowd went crazy, in the best possible way. They opened with Motown Philly and boy oh boy, did it bring back the best of memories. Next up, Bended Knees had us singing (read: screaming) along, and after that, we had a little chat with the group. Shawn started off by thanking us for our continued support throughout their career as they had been around for 38 years! He ended off by introducing Wanya, who was having the time of his life as he was always dancing, just purely enjoying himself. He introduced Nathan as the founder of the group with the amazing bass that had us screaming our lungs out as soon as he opened his mouth. Nathan hailed Shawn and Wanya as the greatest vocalists he had ever known and the love and respect that they have for each other is palpable and warms the heart.

Next up we had It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday and 4 Seasons of loneliness, with the latter being one of my absolute favorite tracks. They surprised us by bringing in some instruments with Nathan and Shawn showcasing their skills on an electric and bass guitar respectively. They did the interlude for Born by the river by Sam Cooke and transitioned into We Jamming by Bob Marley, which was such a vibe as I’m a huge fan of anything reggaeton. They also covered Locked out of heaven by Bruno Mars and Come together by The Beatles, which ended with Nathan shredding on the bass guitar to end it off.

When I tell you that I didn’t sit down once during their set I’m not kidding. They add a little flair to every single one of their hits and it definitely wasn’t the expected chilled, sit-down concert. They sang Doing just fine, Water runs dry and of course, were handing out roses when belting out I’ll make love to you. One lady who was seated close to me managed to snag a rose and was screaming for a straight minute or two. They also sang One sweet day and asked the ladies to cover Mariah’s part, which I loudly croaked along to. They aptly ended off with End of the road, which helped them gain international success in the 90’s. They did 14 songs in total and I absolutely loved the fact that they took a collective bow to the audience after every single song.

BoyzIIMen 2023 SA Tour

The year 2020 will always be remembered due to Covid 19 and the consequent worldwide lockdown that allowed us some much-need self-reflection. I had moved to Cape Town a few months prior and one event that I was really excited about, that I hyped my entire circle up about was the Boyz II Men tour. My obsession with them and previous experience seeing them live is documented here. Regrettably, they had to cancel the tour, understandably so but I knew they wouldn’t leave us hanging. It took two years but I couldn’t be happier to report that leading event organiser, G21 Entertainment together with Vertex Events announced earlier this week the South African show dates for the legendary supergroup Boyz II Men happening later this year.

The tour will kick off in Cape Town on Tuesday, the 31st of October 2023 at the Grand Arena, GrandWest followed by Pretoria at the SunBet Arena, Time Square on Thursday, 2nd November in Pretoria, North West at the Superbowl in Sun City on Saturday, the 4th November 2023 and concluding in Durban on Sunday, the 5th of November 2023 at the ICC

Following discussions with the group’s management earlier this week G21 Entertainment frontman Glen Netshipise stated “We are elated to finally kick off the tour in South Africa later this year. Boyz II Men promised their fans a killer live show shortly before the pandemic, and now keeping true to that promise, now that it’s safe to do so. With three shows planned around the country, we look forward to delivering yet another quality production with this multiple award-winning music outfit .”

Limited tickets for the seated concert are available at Ticketpro and range from R690 to R1790.

Also, previously purchased tickets in 2020/2021 for the canceled show will automatically be valid for the new dates. Ticket holders will need to get in touch with Ticketpro to get their old tickets exchanged.

Boyz II Men 2020 SA Tour

“Motownphilly’s back again…”

Ever so often, a music group breaks onto the scene and stay there. Boyz II Men is such a group and have been giving us good music for longer than I have been alive for. They’re the kings of emotional ballads and a cappella harmonies and got me through many heartbreaks. I was fortunate enough to see them live in Johannesburg in 2015 when they toured South Africa and it had been an amazing experience. Their harmonies are still amazing and the show felt like a karaoke bar as the crowd knew the lyrics to all their songs, I mean every single one! I’ve never seen ladies almost trampling each other as they did when Shawn started handing out roses, such a swoon-worthy moment.

BoysIIMen
Wanya Morris, Nathan Morris and Shawn Stockman

The group was originally known as Unique Attraction and formed by Nathan Morris and Marc Nelson, along with George Baldi, Jon Shoats, and Marguerite Walker in 1985. Wanya Morris joined in 1987 and after Baldi, Shoats, and Walker left in 1988, Shawn Stockholm was recruited. The band originally consisted of five members Marc Nelson, Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris (does anyone know if they’re brothers?) Shawn Stockman and Michael McCary. They eventually renamed the group “Boyz II Men”, after one of New Edition’s songs, “Boys to Men“, from their 1988 album, as they were big fans.

Due to other issues, Marc left the group before they found international fame and we knew Boyz II Men as Nathan, Wanya, Shawn and Michael, who was their bass singer. From the beginning, Boyz II Men featured all four members as leads, avoiding the usual R&B group arrangement of one or two lead singers and a team of background singers. The multiple-lead arrangement became a Boyz II Men trademark, and it became typical to hear Wanya Morris’ vibrato-heavy tenor, Shawn Stockman’s tenor voice, Nathan Morris’ baritone, and Michael McCary’s bass (often used in spoken-word sections of many Boyz II Men hits) trading bars in each song. Their first single, Motownphilly did really well and cemented their place in their industry.

Over the years they’ve brought us amazing music and my favourites are listed here so I won’t get into it again. What I will get into though is providing you with the when, where, and how of their upcoming SA tour.
