An electrifying night with Boyz II Men

I thought I had said all there is to say about Boyz II Men in previous posts but last night proved that theyā€™re the masters of reinvention.

The previous show I attended was very chilled, the kind of show that you would expect with their music. Most people were seated throughout, it was mellow and felt like you were in your room listening to their cassette or CD. Not last night, no. Last night was electrifying in ways that I didnā€™t expect and I welcomed it with open arms.Ā

When we arrived, Mr Phix It was on stage playing mostly 90’s R&B and hip-hop, which was the perfect vibe for the evening. Next up was Lunga Mavusa and I have to admit that Iā€™ve never listened to his music. That is something that I will definitely rectify after last night as his voice and stage presence is absolutely mesmerizing. I didnā€™t know any of his songs but recognized Intliziyo, which he did with Lloyiso. The feedback that he received from the crowd throughout was amazing as, though I didnā€™t know his music, others clearly did.Ā

The moment Boyz II Men walked on stage, dressed in all white, the crowd went crazy, in the best possible way. They opened with Motown Philly and boy oh boy, did it bring back the best of memories. Next up, Bended Knees had us singing (read: screaming) along, and after that, we had a little chat with the group. Shawn started off by thanking us for our continued support throughout their career as they had been around for 38 years! He ended off by introducing Wanya, who was having the time of his life as he was always dancing, just purely enjoying himself. He introduced Nathan as the founder of the group with the amazing bass that had us screaming our lungs out as soon as he opened his mouth. Nathan hailed Shawn and Wanya as the greatest vocalists he had ever known and the love and respect that they have for each other is palpable and warms the heart.

Next up we had Itā€™s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday and 4 Seasons of loneliness, with the latter being one of my absolute favorite tracks. They surprised us by bringing in some instruments with Nathan and Shawn showcasing their skills on an electric and bass guitar respectively. They did the interlude for Born by the river by Sam Cooke and transitioned into We Jamming by Bob Marley, which was such a vibe as Iā€™m a huge fan of anything reggaeton. They also covered Locked out of heaven by Bruno Mars and Come together by The Beatles, which ended with Nathan shredding on the bass guitar to end it off.

When I tell you that I didnā€™t sit down once during their set Iā€™m not kidding. They add a little flair to every single one of their hits and it definitely wasnā€™t the expected chilled, sit-down concert. They sang Doing just fine, Water runs dry and of course, were handing out roses when belting out Iā€™ll make love to you. One lady who was seated close to me managed to snag a rose and was screaming for a straight minute or two. They also sang One sweet day and asked the ladies to cover Mariahā€™s part, which I loudly croaked along to. They aptly ended off with End of the road, which helped them gain international success in the 90ā€™s. They did 14 songs in total and I absolutely loved the fact that they took a collective bow to the audience after every single song.

Let’s brighten and glow with Neutriberbs SA

I haven’t done a skincare review in a hot minute and it has been mainly because I haven’t found anything worth writing about. Until now, of course. Neutriherbs reached out to me to find out if I’d be interested in trialing their Vitamin C Brightening & Glow Facial Kit and I was curious to see the results. The kit consists of a Vitamin C brightening & glow daily facial cleanser, enhanced Vitamin C serum with hyaluronic acid, and Vitamin C brightening & glow cream. I was tasked with using this kit for a month and had to take daily selfies, to document my progress. If you like selfies, this would be a piece of cake but I knew I’d get tired of my face after 30 daily selfies but I still like a challenge so I opted in.

My skincare regime has always been very minimalistic. A good cleanser, exfoliant, serum, and moisturizer was all I needed but as you get older more areas become problem areas. In my next review, I’ll let you in on my age-appropriate (if there’s such a thing) regime that I’ll be starting in a month or so. In this post, I’ll do a breakdown of the products I’ve used, my experience with them, and the benefits of using them on your face and neck.

I’ve also done a video review on Instagram and below are my before and after pictures of using this kit.

Vitamin C Brightening & Glow Daily Facial Cleanser

I love a good cleanser and this one is definitely that, and more. I want my face to feel clean and exfoliated without using an actual exfoliator. The benefits are listed on the website and I totally agree with it.

Benefits:
– Soothes and purifies skin
– Non-drying, assists in balancing skin moisture levels
– Fights against anti-aging with free radicals
– Diminishes surface lines and wrinkles by stimulating collagen
– Naturally lifts and firms sagging skin
– Effectively cleanses skin and works as a makeup remover

Enhanced Vitamin C Serum with Hyaluronic Acid

I appreciate an effective serum that leaves my skin feeling soft and supple and would recommend this one. A little goes a long way, for your face, neck, and decolletage, so don’t be fooled into thinking you need to lather it.

Benefits:
– Protects skin from environmental stressors with its antioxidant formulae
– Fades sun spots and discoloration
– Hydrates and moisturizes skin
– Naturally lifts and firms skin
– Highlights and softens skin
– No parabĆ©ns, no alcohol

Vitamin C Brightening & Glow Daily Facial Cream

A good moisturizer is vital to seal in all the other good things you’ve already done to your face. Once again, a little goes a long way and please, do not only apply to your face while your neck is begging for some targeted moisture. You can find the ingredients used in all of these products on their website so I won’t bore you with it.

Benefits:
– Plumps and hydrates skin.
– Assists in balancing skin moisture levels.
– Fights against anti-aging with free radicals.
– Diminishes surface lines and wrinkles by stimulating collagen.
– Naturally lifts and firms sagging skin.

Honestly, would I recommend this range? A resounding yes! All of these products work in harmony with each other to make your skin look its best and who doesn’t want that?

The hardest part for me was the daily selfies. I have my days when I really like my face and other times, there are weeks that go by before I take a selfie that’s actually seen by the outside world. On the other hand, you are actually able to track and see the results in real-time so that was an added bonus for me.

The kit retails for ZAR 799.00 but you get 10% off your first purchase. Also, they have a Payflex option that allows you to pay it off in 4 installments over 6 weeks, at no added cost. You can use my code, JGMQIVPW, with your firstPayflex purchase to get R200 off your first purchase, you’re welcome.

One night with Tamia

Childhood dreams do come true, sometimes in an unexpectedly spectacular way. I got to take the person that introduced me to Tamia’s music to see her live in concert and I think I’m sorted for all future birthday and Christmas presents. It was a magical night and if you’re in Durban and Pretoria, you will experience it soon.

Kicking off the evening was Kitchen Mess and though it was my first time experiencing their music, it was definitely the perfect start to the evening. Classics like Gangster lovin’ were giving a uniquely South African flair and we really enjoyed it.

When I found out that Lloyiso will be opening for Tamia, I was elated. I am a big fan of his voice and first started listening to covers he did and have a playlist on my phone exclusively for his music. I am really happy that he performed Speak, Seasons, and Intliziyo as these are my absolute favorite songs by him. His energy was very electric and the crowd absolutely loved his performance. He ended his performance with Easy on Me by Adele, which is one of my favorite covers that he had done so far. I will say though, I would love to see him in a more intimate set-up with minimal instruments where the focus is just on his voice. I’ll keep an eye out for his Cape Town shows that will have a set-up like that in the future.

Tamia looked absolutely amazing, first of all. Wearing all black, with touches of silver, which is my favourite colour palette, if I can’t wear all black. It was also the colour palette for my outfit for the concert, coincidentally. I stepped out to top up on drinks so I’m not 100% sure which song she opened with but the first song I heard when walking back in was Still. In my previous post, I mentioned that it’s my current favourite and I’m so happy that it was the first song I heard live.

She also performed Almost, Make tonight beautiful, Careless Whisper, You put a move on my heart, Love me in a special way, This time it’s love, Never gonna let you go, Rain on me, Officially missing you, Missing you, So into you, You put a move on my heart, and Stranger in my house, amongst other songs. She also did a rendition of Maxwell’s This women’s work and Cece Winans’ Tomorrow. She ended off the show with Who do you tell and we were definitely left wanting more as I really hoped that she would perform Me.

People exiting the arena had their own little concert outside and still continued singing her songs after the show ended.

Overall, this was an amazing experience that 9 year old me never thought I would have and I’m so utterly grateful. Thank you Tutone Communications, this definitely made my year!

#CLICKSBEAUTYPLAYGROUND

It’s that time of the year again when natural-haired beauties flock to whatever venue Clicks had chosen to bestow knowledge and share free goodies with us. The reason for this post is the fact that the first round of tickets is sold out and the last limited tickets had been made available today, as per this Clicks post, so I didn’t want you to miss out.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, here’s some more information: #ClicksBeautyPlayground is a day or two where Clicks bring the hottest haircare, skincare, and makeup brands together and invite us, the public, to hang out with them. The cost of the ticket is a fraction of the goodies that you get for free and it’s honestly such a good investment. I’ve attended three or four times, in Johannesburg and Cape Town and the goodie bag was really good to me. The tickets usually start from R295 and the goodie bag is worth R2000+, excluding the free goodies that you get from the vendors.

According to Quicket, “There will be big-name beauty influencers, live demos, guest speakers, makeovers, masterclasses, loads of freebies, and expert advice; truly something for everyone! This beauty loverā€™s paradise is hosted by Siv Ngesi and Palesa Tembe, with live sounds by DJ @RoyHendrix.” If you’re like me and food is life, don’t worry food and drinks will be on sale so the money you’re saving on hair care products for the next few months can be spent on feeding yourself. When I say these products last, I’m not kidding. I still have products left from last year’s event and this is after sharing with friends and family.

Dax

Have you ever listened to a song, at a certain period of your life, and felt like it was written for you? Or, if you knew how to put it in words, that would be exactly what you wouldā€™ve said? I have bad days and sometimes they get really bad. On this particular day, I overheard my partner listening to one of his favourite tracks and it just felt like I was punched in the gut. Bear in mind, this is a song he listened to several times but this is the first time I actually really listened. The words were as follows:

I can’t find myself, I get lost inside my brain

I think I might need help but I pushed all of ’em away

I took the cards they dealt ,and there’s nothin’ I can change

So when I’m by myself, I just pray for brighter days

This is the chorus from the song Depression by Dax. Itā€™s a song that really captured what I felt as it was around the time that I started with therapy. I wanted to know if this was a fluke or if the overall catalog of his work would be as hard-hitting. I listened to ā€œDear Alcoholā€ and honestly, the words describe why I drink sometimes because I often donā€™t want to deal with my thoughts. I went on to listen to ā€œDear Godā€ and man, it really hit a nerve as it voiced questions that I usually ask God in silence. The one thing about his music that stands out is the fact heā€™s a wordsmith, for lack of a better word. Honestly, if you listen to his music you will realise that the words and puns really make you think. Itā€™s honest music, I think thatā€™s the best way to describe it.

Do yourself a favour and check out his one-take, 20-minute-long video for ā€œThe next rap god 2ā€. You know when you listen to a song, then pause it at certain points to allow the words to sink in? I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever done that before but with this song I did. Youā€™d think that a 20-minute song would be boring as it would essentially be saying the same thing, right? Wrong, not in this case as it doesnā€™t even feel like youā€™re listening for 20 minutes.

I can honestly tell you that I donā€™t know anything about Daxā€™s life aside from what Iā€™ve learned by listening to his music. So often we get caught up in an artistā€™s life and it evolves from being about their music to being about them as human beings. As much as my inner alien appreciates all human beings, in this case, Iā€™m glad that my focus had only been his music. I feel that music had been created to speak to us and thatā€™s what it should do, unspoiled by who the artist is as a human being. For me, Dax will be the artist and his music is the art form, regardless of who he is as a human being.

Dax was renamed “Muzi” in 2021 by his South African fans and I’m sure that they’re very pleased that he’s making his way back to our shores. I’m a new fan but I’m quite excited to see him live and the fact that the Cape Town leg is happening around the corner from where I live is an added bonus. He will be doing 8 shows, which is about 4 more than most international artists do when they’re on this side. Places like Soweto, Rustenburg, Polokwane, and Mbombela are rarely included in international tours and I love seeing them on the list.

Image courtesy of Dax’s Facebook here.

Tickets are very affordable, starting from ZAR 300, and are available from Webtickets, Pick n’ Pay, and Boxer stores nationwide, making it more accessible for everyone. At the time of publishing this post, I haven’t been able to find the tour tickets on Webtickets and I think it is a technical issue.

Tamia live in South Africa

There are certain artists that are synonymous with cleaning your house and Tamia is top of the list for a lot of South Africans. So many songs of hers have a special place in my heart as they helped me through heartbreak and house cleaning alike. My current favorite is Still as I recently got married and the words really resonate with me.

Usually when two people are together for a long time
Things seem to change
It’s been said nothing good lasts forever but this love gets better every day
We get all excited inside every time that we get alone
He still got love in his eyes, and I still got love in my soul

As cliche as it sounds, these are words that I would’ve written if they weren’t already in a song. When I first heard the song, I yearned for a love like the one she was singing about. Mind you, I was in high school, a regte snotkop, dealing with my first heartbreak that lasted for about a week, how easy we heal when we haven’t really loved. I was introduced to her music by my cousin and obviously, she was the first person I shared the news with and we are making plans to book seats together so we can sing our hearts out.

Acclaimed entertainment company G Twenty One Live together with Vertex Events announced that the multi-Grammy-nominated international artist Tamia will be touring the country with a three-city tour later this year.

No stranger to South Africa, the much-adored super-talented live performer will return to the country for the fourth time over the past decade.

The Canadian-born R&B singer/songwriter has released multiple albums, collaborated with several prominent international musical icons, and is well known for her philanthropic work within the music industry over the span of her career.

Kicking off her South African tour on Tuesday 4th July at the Grand Arena, GrandWest in the Mother City Cape Town, she moves onto KZN on Saturday 7th July performing at the Durban ICC and concludes the tour on Saturday 8th July at the Sunbet Arena, Time Square in Pretoria.

BoyzIIMen 2023 SA Tour

The year 2020 will always be remembered due to Covid 19 and the consequent worldwide lockdown that allowed us some much-need self-reflection. I had moved to Cape Town a few months prior and one event that I was really excited about, that I hyped my entire circle up about was the Boyz II Men tour. My obsession with them and previous experience seeing them live is documented here. Regrettably, they had to cancel the tour, understandably so but I knew they wouldn’t leave us hanging. It took two years but I couldn’t be happier to report that leading event organiser, G21 Entertainment together with Vertex Events announced earlier this week the South African show dates for the legendary supergroup Boyz II Men happening later this year.

Ā
The tour will kick off in Cape Town on Tuesday, the 31st of October 2023 at the Grand Arena, GrandWest followed by Pretoria at the SunBet Arena, Time Square on Thursday, 2nd November in Pretoria, North West at the Superbowl in Sun City on Saturday, the 4th November 2023 and concluding in Durban on Sunday, the 5th of November 2023 at the ICC
Ā
Following discussions with the groupā€™s management earlier this week G21 Entertainment frontman Glen Netshipise statedĀ ā€œWe are elated to finally kick off the tour in South Africa later this year. Boyz II Men promised their fans a killer live show shortly before the pandemic, and now keeping true to that promise, now that itā€™s safe to do so. With three shows planned around the country, we look forward to delivering yet another quality production with this multiple award-winning music outfit .ā€
Ā
Limited tickets for the seated concert are available at Ticketpro and range from R690 to R1790.
Ā
Also, previously purchased tickets in 2020/2021 for the canceled show will automatically be valid for the new dates. Ticket holders will need to get in touch with Ticketpro to get their old tickets exchanged.

Backstreet’s back, alright!

There’s nothing better than reliving a carefree youth through music. I mean, maybe there are some things that beat that feeling but often, as adults with responsibilities, we’d like to go back to a time when we had none, and what better to do so than teleportation through your favorite tunes?

To me, artists like Backstreet Boys are reminiscent of simpler times. And I’m grateful to companies like Big Concert that allow my childhood dreams of seeing these artists live, come true. Backstreet Boys shaped my preteen and teenage years as my cousins were obsessed with them. I grew up listening to Radio Sonder Grense and on the odd occasion they would throw some boy bands in the mix of “boere musiek”. I saw my cousins once a year and they introduced me to “As long as you love me.” This was the holiday before I had to go to boarding school and I was hellbent on singing it in the talent show. What I forgot was that I can’t sing to save my life nor do I know all the words to the song. This was at a time when we couldn’t just Google the lyrics. You had to record the song, play and stop and write the lyrics down; yes, I am that old.

Fortunately, I didn’t get a chance to embarrass myself or scar everyone’s hearing but the song stuck. As did a lot of their other music and I’m super stoked to even have the nerve to plan to see them live. It seems that most international artists at the peak of their careers forget places like South Africa but remember us when the rest of the world are over them. No complaints from my side as I know tickets would perhaps not be affordable if they come here at their peak but still, I’m allowed to feel a bit snubbed, right? It’s a common occurrence and a lot of people have actually spoken up about it in recent years.

To be quite honest with you, this post is not bringing good news. If you were planning on singing along to I want it that way, Shape of my heart and Larger than life, to name a few, you would have to do it from the comfort of your house. As seen on Big Concert’s website, tickets for all four shows are currently sold out. Yes, even the two extra added dates are sold out.

I personally feel that they underestimated their fan base in South Africa and should’ve, instead of opting for Grandwest Casino in Cape Town, booked out Greenpoint stadium. I understand why FNB stadium wasn’t booked as I still haven’t recovered from the Global Citizen incident so that’s fair. The memes accompanying this tour cracked me up, for real. If you haven’t seen it yet, just take a scroll through social media and if you’re offended, you’re in the right place. It makes us, yes I’m a fan, out to be quite ancient and it’s not a complete lie. By TikTok standards, anyone born in the ’70s and ’80s is a fossil but we look younger than the rest, no doubt due to the good music we grew up with. If you want to take that as a jab against modern music, that’s completely up to you.

I sincerely hope that a new date will be added for Cape Town or that it will at least be moved to the stadium for more people to be accommodated. May is my birthday month and this would make 11-year-old me so happy to sing along, live, and not care about people’s ears for a change.
